We Talk To You

September 13, 2016

While I’d been preaching the virtues of intentional living every day to everyone else, I discovered, when it came time to reinvent myself again, that I’d not been paying attention to my own accumulation.  Up until I created the TV show, I’d always lived a somewhat monastic lifestyle in the arts, being a firm believer that he who has less travels farthest.  As a result, I’d had an amazing life thus far.

Now, with two homes in LA, a production studio, a marketing company an...

While I’d never thought I did anything creative purely for money or worldly gain, I became acutely aware, over time,  just how much "success" had inadvertently motivated far more of my artistic ideas than I’d thought.  I’d always been a realist, and so proud that I was as versed in right brain matter as much as left brain stuff.

I’d spent much time working with other artists who typically were naive regarding business and marketing of their ideas.  I’d tell them ov...

We all do it.  We postpone, put off and habitually ignore. We then rationalize procrastination as everything but what it really is...apathy. We tell ourselves that it's because we don't have time, when in truth, we're the ones who regulate where we'll spend our hours.  We tell ourselves that we don't know how, yet we're then ones who decide what we learn.  We tell ourselves that it's uncomfortable when we know the truth that not doing something about it could, in the end, mut...

In a world where almost everything is now on demand, you'd think our lives would be easier, fuller, more textured. Who would have believed that we could make a list of entertainment we wanted to watch, and it would be there, waiting for us? Imagine getting notices from people interested specifically in what we like, delivered right to our personal mailbox.  One would have never dreamed that new Apps would allow us to navigate the globe, simplify tasking, pay bills, book fligh...

We as humans can't get through any kind of time span here, without getting dinged up a bit...hurt actually.  We learn early that a human shell is the only way to survive. The only way to protect our spiritual Self, within. Over time, we begin to live two lives.  The one we show the world, and the one we protect, and only reveal when we feel safe.  The problem is, really feeling safe, gets harder and harder as we age, when it logically should become easier.  It's a case of kno...

Conversely, this upbringing did foster independence. It honed my imagination which was so vital to a young lad with severe dyslexia that would remain undiagnosed until high school. In the formative years, writing or reading was all but futile and a constant reminder that I was ‘challenged.’ As a result, media (TV and radio) was a salvation since it was an easily accessible audio-visual. It became the continuing thread no matter where we were.

Distant background media in anothe...

You know how important I feel it is to never let life happen without intention, but to take charge and make it happen. Setting the groundwork for each new phases of one’s life is essential if the true desire is to continue to live a meaningful existence. By "meaningful" I mean one that continues to challenge and educate versus keeping us trapped in old comfort zones.

Today, we watch others reinvent all the time now. In a social media-driven world we are bombarded with personal...

I don’t have children, so this could seem like a ‘loaded gun’ topic for a non-parent. However, I do know, having talked to many kids (including in my own family), having done shows on the topic and having been an odd child myself, that getting out into the world is no longer that cut and dry, sink or swim proposition it once was. Fear is fear, and it breeds with either not enough information or way too much of it at the wrong time, manifesting in two entirely different ways.

F...

Well, the dialogue is not that much different then when a divorce happens.  It’s not the kid’s fault, and that has to be stressed if you’re no longer going to be WITH the kids.  But then, I’m not sure what’s really behind your question.  If it’s simply about telling your children that it’s time for a change, which includes them and the family, then that’s the time that you have the conversation about what reinvention actually means and why it’s so vital to every human’s growt...

People thought I was nuts while all hell seemed to be unleashed all at once. But I have seen this before.  No, not the dust bowl Grapes of Wrath… I’m not THAT old.  But I do watch a lot of old movies, and that one just recently.

Everything we Americans knew and took for granted went up on the chopping block.  Homes foreclosed. Suddenly real estate investments that had been the solid American dream were no longer.  Jobs evaporated and many Americans felt humiliation and sh...
